NINDS has new programmatic priorities for the K24, especially with regards to the proposed mentoring plan. Please see notice NOT-NS-09-016 for details.
A new grant program exists to support the research training and education of residents and fellows of neurology, neurosurgery, neuropathology and neuroradiology. This institutional award is designed to facilitate the transition from medical training into successful research careers. Medical residents participate in an intensive 9 to 24 month mentored research education experience during residency and fellowship years to develop research skills and become better positioned to compete for independent funding. To learn more about this opportunity, refer to the funding opportunity announcement RFA-NS-10-002.
Salaries for NINDS mentored career award (K) recipients have traditionally been capped at $85,000. In the first 3 years of the award, K awardees may not collect salary from another federal grant. NINDS has now instituted the following new policy. For mentored K awardees who obtain an R01 during the first 3 years of their K award, the NINDS salary cap will be eliminated and K awardees can collect up to 80% of real base salary, up to the NIH cap, from the K award, commensurate with effort towards the K award project. For important details and additional information, refer to the Notice.
There has been a correction to the SF424 (R&R) Individual Fellowship Application Guide. The affected section of the instructions relates to describing the respective roles of sponsors in the development of the research plan, and the rationale for selection of sponsor and institution. For more information, refer to the Notice.
